Art quilts give me the option of working to a larger scale than the Thread Paintings. They usually begin with a drawing or sketch from a photo, but I love the process of drawing with my quilting machine that allows the image to speak as it grows, to evolve. The techniques I mostly use are free motion quilting, raw edge fused applique, hand colouring with Inktense pencils and fixed with a colourfast medium.
In late 2010, the Newcastle Calvary Mater Hospital Chapel commissioned me to create four large wall hangings, four altar cloths and to rework a previously commissioned wall hanging, for their new Chapel. The brief was for the work to be inclusive of all faiths and people and to reflect the Hunter region. The result was four quilted wall hangings which reflect Hunter lifestyle and from the vantage point of the hospital these four aspects can be seen – the water, the land, the city and the valley.
